Bäckaskog Slott stands on a narrow strip of land between the lakes Ivösjön and Oppmannasjön in Scania, southern Sweden. Founded as a Premonstratensian monastery in the 13th century and given its present look by the Ramel family in the 16th and 17th centuries, it is today a castle hotel with a restaurant, a park and a lakeside setting. A buffet breakfast is included, and Kristianstad is a short drive away.
Staying at Bäckaskog Slott means sleeping in a former monastery turned castle, with a lake on either side. Expedia lists 54 guest rooms, and the listing’s pictures show rooms with exposed wooden beams, chandeliers and traditional furniture, a reception hall with a statue and a bar with comfortable seating. Each room has its own bathroom with a shower, a flat-screen TV, a desk, a fan and blackout curtains, and free Wi-Fi covers all rooms.
A breakfast buffet is included and served daily from 7 am to 10 am. The castle has a restaurant, a bar/lounge, a billiard table and a banquet hall, plus five meeting rooms and a wedding service, which makes it a popular venue for celebrations and conferences.
Active guests can borrow bicycles free of charge, go rowing or canoeing on the lakes and follow walking and cycling paths. There are a garden and a terrace, and free cots are available. Staff can help with planning tours and buying tickets; there is no lift.
A landscape park was laid out around the castle between 1820 and 1840. Its wilder part survives as the “wild park”, while an orangery and decorative buildings were pulled down in the early 1900s. Around 1950 and 1960 new areas were added to teach visitors about garden ideals and plant names, among them a herb garden with culinary and medicinal plants and a biblical garden. Thanks to its successful rose growing, Bäckaskog earned the nickname “the castle of roses”.
The castle chapel is part of the complex. The Swedish television programme Stjärnorna på slottet was recorded here in 2012–2013 and 2021–2025, and the children’s book Rymlingen (1996) is set at Bäckaskog in the 14th century.
The details below come from the Expedia listing (as of 14 Oct 2026); room details may vary from room to room.
Bäckaskog stands in Kiaby parish, Kristianstad Municipality, on the isthmus between Ivösjön, Scania’s largest lake, and Oppmannasjön, about 5 km north of Fjälkinge. Kristianstad is about 15 km away as the crow flies. Expedia gives 8 minutes by car to Fjälkinge station and 29 minutes to Kristianstad airport (KID).
The Ivösjön–Oppmannasjön area is a Natura 2000 site, and the Brinkahagen–Möllerödsnäs nature reserve lies close by. Oppmannasjön drains through a short canal across the isthmus into Ivösjön right at the castle. Restaurants are 10 to 14 minutes away by car, and Expedia also lists the Naturum Vattenriket visitor centre and golf courses among the area’s attractions.
Further afield lie Karsholm Castle on the far shore of Oppmannasjön, the town of Kristianstad, Sölvesborg in Blekinge and the castles of north-eastern Scania, including Hanaskog and Wanås with its sculpture park.
