The history of Impruneta, the town around the castle
Antiquity – Archaeological finds point to Etruscan settlement, and digs have shown an Etruscan sanctuary of a water cult on the site of today’s basilica; Roman presence survives in place names such as Quintole and Valiano.
1032 – The earliest document mentioning the parish church of Santa Maria is an offer of property drawn up in the Badia Fiorentina.
1059 – A plaque on the façade records the consecration of the church, ordered by Pope Nicholas II.
1135 – The Florentine army destroys the castle of Montebuoni, stronghold of the Buondelmonti family, who remain patrons of the church.
1354 – The first procession carries the image of the Madonna of Impruneta to Florence, to ask for protection against floods and bad weather.
1634 – The portico of the church is built to a design by Gherardo Silvani; the square in front is laid out with loggias between 1653 and 1670.
1929 – Impruneta becomes an independent municipality.
1944 – The church is badly bombed on the night of 27–28 July; restoration is completed in 1955.

Impruneta has long been tied to Florence. The town is famous for its terracotta, the so-called cotto dell’Impruneta: according to Wikipedia, the tiles of Brunelleschi’s dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, the building material of Medici villas and Della Robbia sculptures all link the town to the city. Its calendar includes the Fair of St Luke in mid-October and the Grape Festival on the last Sunday of September.
The sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Impruneta is one of the most important Marian shrines in Italy and probably the oldest in Tuscany, according to Wikipedia. Its treasures are shown in the neighbouring museum, opened in 1987, and the arcaded Piazza Buondelmonti in front hosts the town’s main festivals. Everything on this page about the castle itself comes from the Expedia listing; the history above belongs to the town.
