Staying in a château in Brocas: a house for large groups
The listing is called “Château pour 24 personnes”, and Expedia presents it as a château for families and groups with a private host. It is a self-catering holiday let rather than a hotel, so it suits a family reunion, a wedding party or a group of friends who want the whole house to themselves. The listing does not give the building a name; the village does have a château of its own, the Château d’Aon, but nothing confirms that it is the same building.
According to Expedia, the rooms come with private pools and fireplaces, and the property has an outdoor pool, a garden with a barbecue, deck chairs and outdoor furniture, a children’s playground and a games room with a billiard table and arcade games. The photos show a grand staircase with an ornate metal balustrade and chandelier, a rustic dining room with a brick fireplace, and a stone building with a large garden.
Inside, the listing mentions four bathrooms with bath or shower, hair dryers, TVs, a dining table, a fully equipped kitchen (oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, kettle, toaster), an iron, a laundry with dryer, bed linen and central heating. Wi-Fi is available in all rooms, and a café and a restaurant are a 3 to 6 minute walk away.

The history of Brocas, its château and its ironworks
988–996 – Raymond de Lusignan grants a charter concerning the court of Brocas to Guillaume Sanche, Count of Gascony, who gives it to the abbey of Saint-Sever.
c. 1105 – Guillaume-Amanieu, lord of Brocas, takes part in the First Crusade alongside Gaston IV of Béarn.
1225–1230 – The castle of Labrit, cradle of the lords of Albret, is built about 7 km from Brocas.
before 1645 – Pierre II de Castelnau has the Château d’Aon built in the village; it is first recorded in his estate inventory after his death in 1645.
1832–1833 – The ironmaster Larreillet founds the Brocas forges beside the Estrigon; the first casting takes place on 12 June 1833.
1843 – A flood of the Estrigon on 15 January drowns the founder’s son and seventeen workers, an event kept alive in a local song.
1881 – Competition from larger ironworks ends production at the blast furnace after about fifty years.
c. 1904 – The Brocas forges close for good.
1989 – The Forges Museum opens in the former mill beside the blast furnace.
The blast furnace of Brocas, restored beside the pond, is the best-known relic of the Landes iron industry, which drew on local “garluche” iron ore, pine charcoal and the river. The forge complex, with furnace, mill, workshop, barn, dam and hydraulic works, has been listed as a historic monument since 2006.
The timeline above concerns the village and its surroundings; the sources consulted do not say whether the listing’s château is the Château d’Aon or another building.
