Medieval Castle of Pouancé
approx. 1.5 km
A fortress on the old border between Anjou and Brittany, built from the 12th to the 15th century. With the town walls it covers three hectares; classified in 1926.
The Château de Tressé stands in a landscaped park about a kilometre from the centre of Pouancé, on the old border between Anjou and Brittany. Built between 1845 and 1848 for the Marquis de Préaulx, this neoclassical château later served as a children’s preventorium and a care home, and today it is a château hotel with a spa, a restaurant and indoor and outdoor pools.
Staying at Château de Tressé means sleeping in a 19th-century mansion that has been turned into a hotel. Expedia describes it as a luxury-style château suited to families in a rural setting. The rooms are individually decorated, with fireplaces and high-quality bedding, a choice of pillows and workspaces that suit a laptop, and some rooms are soundproofed.
Food and drink are covered on site: the listing mentions a restaurant, a bar and lounge and two cafés, with private picnics and private dining for couples. A breakfast buffet is served daily from 7 am to 10.30 am for an extra charge. A club house and a terrace complete the picture, and the setting is a garden with a picnic area in the park.
The full-service spa has ten treatment rooms, including rooms for couples, and offers aromatherapy, ayurvedic treatments, hot stone and classic massages, facials, body and detox wraps, hydrotherapy and a steam bath. Active guests can use the free bicycles, walk or cycle the local trails, and try archery or fishing. Families are catered for with babysitting at an extra charge, a high chair, a changing table, toys and children’s books. For business or events there are two meeting rooms, a round-the-clock business centre and a 150 square metre conference centre.
The château is a large rectangular building on five levels: a semi-basement for the kitchen, offices and cellars, a ground floor with entrance hall, grand salon, library and dining room, and bedroom floors above. The north front carries the richest sculpted decoration, with dormers, pediments and relief medallions; the south front has projecting wings with pavilion roofs and a central clock.
Much of the interior was altered when the building became a care home, but the billiard room, the grand salon and the library kept their original decoration; the library has a painted false vault with putti symbolising the seasons and the arts. In the park stand a chapel that holds the coffins of family members, an ice house, a kiosk and the former stables.
The details below come from the Expedia listing (as of 14 Oct 2026); some services, such as the outdoor pool, depend on the season.
The château stands at Tressé, on the road to Segré, about a kilometre from the centre of Pouancé in the commune of Ombrée d’Anjou, in the north-west of Maine-et-Loire. Pouancé lies on the old western frontier of Anjou, facing Brittany, which explains the number of fortifications in the area.
In the town itself are the medieval castle, the surviving town walls and the church of Sainte-Madeleine. Expedia also lists the Château de Pouancé, the churches of Combrée and Bel-Air and other sights within about 15 km.
Further afield, Châteaubriant lies about 16 km to the west, Ancenis and the Loire about 40 km, and Vitré, with its mighty castle, about 43 km. Expedia gives no driving times, so a car is the easiest way to explore.
