Langley Castle Hotel occupies a restored medieval tower house in the South Tyne valley, about five kilometres south of Haydon Bridge in Northumberland. Begun around 1350 and completed in 1364, the Grade I listed castle lay in ruins for some 500 years after a fire before its restoration was finished in 1914. Today you can stay overnight behind its stone walls, in a woodland estate with Hadrian’s Wall within easy reach.
Sleeping at Langley Castle Hotel means spending the night inside a genuine medieval castle rather than a castle-style building. The Grade I listed tower house has four storeys, a tower at each corner and walls set on huge boulders, and it stands in a 10-acre woodland estate.
According to the Expedia listing, every room has free Wi-Fi, high-quality bedding, a flat-screen TV with premium satellite channels, air conditioning, central heating, a kettle with free tea and coffee, free mineral water, and a shower with free toiletries. Round-the-clock room service, daily housekeeping and an iron and ironing board are also listed.
Meals are served at Josephine’s Restaurant, which Expedia describes as a fine-dining restaurant with British cuisine, offering breakfast and dinner and a children’s menu. There is also a bar and lounge, a café, a snack bar and The Drawing Room, as well as a ballroom, a banqueting hall and a reception hall; the property offers a wedding service.
Langley is an H-shaped tower house of four floors with a main hall on the upper floor, a design known as an upper-floor hall house. The walls rest on gigantic boulders, each corner has a tower rising one storey above the main building, and a small pele-like tower holds the original entrance and the spiral staircase that serves every floor.
The south-west tower contains twelve garderobes (medieval toilets), four on each floor and each with its own pointed archway, which Wikipedia counts among the most remarkable of their kind in Europe. A portcullis slot survives near the main entrance, and the former chapel is now the Cadwallader Bates Memorial Room. The restoration also enlarged the windows and added a door on the south side.
The details below come from the Expedia listing (as of 14 Oct 2026); features can vary from room to room.
The castle stands in the village of Langley-on-Tyne, in the valley of the River South Tyne in Northumberland, about five kilometres south of Haydon Bridge. Expedia places the North Pennines about 3 km away and the Northumberland National Park, Vindolanda and Hexham Abbey within roughly 15 km. Haydon Bridge station is a 6-minute drive, and Carlisle Airport about 45 minutes by car.
Roman Britain is the main draw: Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort both lie around 8 km away as the crow flies, while Chesters Roman Fort and the market town of Hexham are about 10 km off. Closer to the castle, Allen Banks and Staward Gorge is a National Trust property with a Victorian garden in a wooded gorge. Newcastle upon Tyne lies roughly 41 km to the east.
