Schloss Thalheim is a sprawling castle complex in the village of Thalheim, part of Kapelln in Lower Austria. Its origins go back to the 17th century, and the main building dates from around 1600, with a historicist wing added in the late 19th century. Today the listed castle takes guests as a castle hotel, with a restaurant, sauna and steam bath, between St. Pölten and the Danube.
To stay at Schloss Thalheim is to sleep in a castle that has grown over centuries. The complex has several wings and stands at the western edge of the village, at the foot of a slope. Its three-storey old castle and a long single-storey farm wing date from around 1600, a historicist residential wing was added at the end of the 19th century, and the former castle chapel stands outside the courtyard. According to the heritage listing, the castle was recently adapted as a hotel.
The Expedia listing mentions air-conditioned rooms with high-quality bedding, safes, free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, slippers, designer toiletries, a minibar, a 32-inch flat-screen TV with satellite channels and room service at certain times. Some rooms are sound-insulated, cots are free, and an extra bed is available for a surcharge. Exposed timber beams and high ceilings appear in the lounge and bedroom areas, and the lobby has a fireplace.
The restaurant “Am Schlossgarten” serves lunch, dinner and light meals, with outdoor dining on the terrace, and a café completes the offer. For relaxing there are a sauna, a steam bath, a fitness centre and three treatment rooms for classic, sports and deep-tissue massages. A regional breakfast is available every day from 7:00 to 10:00 against a supplement.
Today the castle is a listed monument. The Austrian monument register describes a sprawling complex of several wings at the foot of a slope, made up essentially of the three-storey old castle, the long farm wing and the historicist residential part, with the former chapel outside the courtyard. The village’s best-known native, the translator and Esperantist Jenny Weleminsky (1882–1957), was born in Thalheim.
