Teleborgs Slott: a night in a lakeside castle in Växjö, Småland
Teleborg Castle (Teleborgs slott) stands on a rocky point beside Lake Trummen, 4–5 km south of Växjö in Småland. It was completed in 1900 as a belated wedding present from a count to his wife, in the style of a medieval knights’ castle. Today it welcomes overnight guests, with a restaurant, a bar, a library and a sauna, on the campus of Linnaeus University.
Staying at Teleborgs Slott: a night in a castle on Lake Trummen
To stay at Teleborgs Slott is to sleep in a building that looks like a Rhine-valley knights’ castle transplanted to the Småland lakeside. The main building stands on a rocky point jutting into the lake, with a square main tower at one corner and a smaller round tower at the opposite one. Expedia presents it as a lakeside castle with a garden, a terrace and a library.
The listing mentions free Wi-Fi in all rooms, bed linen, a bathroom with bath or shower, a hairdryer, free toiletries including toothbrush and toothpaste, a 25-inch flat-screen TV with cable channels, free mineral water, a kettle, central heating and an iron on request. Rooms are cleaned daily. A breakfast buffet is included, served from 7:00 to 9:00 on weekdays and from 8:00 to 10:00 at weekends.
Besides the restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and light meals, there is a bar/lounge, a sauna and a souvenir kiosk, and romance and proposal packages are offered. Meetings are well catered for, with four meeting rooms, an 80-square-metre conference centre and a banquet hall. Walking and cycling paths start close by.

The history of Teleborgs Slott
1819 – A Växjö tanner builds the manor of Tuvan, later the castle’s estate.
1825–1827 – The poet Esaias Tegnér lives in the manor’s main building, before moving to the bishop’s residence in Växjö.
1897–1900 – Count Gustav Fredrik Bonde af Björnö has the castle built by the Malmö architects Lindvall & Boklund, inspired by the knights’ castles of the Rhine valley, as a belated wedding present to his second wife, Anna Koskull. It is completed in 1900 and forms part of an entailed estate.
1909–1917 – The count dies in 1909 and his wife eight years later. The estate passes to his nephew Christer Bonde, who runs the castle for a few years as a girls’ boarding school and guest house.
1931 – Christer Bonde moves in himself and lays out a castle park.
1956 – His son Fredrik Ulf Bonde, an embassy counsellor in Rome, inherits the castle.
1964 – The City of Växjö buys the castle, and the entail is dissolved.
today – The castle belongs to the property company Vöfab and is run as a restaurant and conference venue, on the Linnaeus University campus.
The main building is built of brick, with the outer sides clad in red and grey granite, and rises over three floors. Its name comes from Telestad, one of the larger villages south of Växjö, whose farms were gathered under the Tuvan estate in the 1840s. Despite its medieval look, Teleborg was built at the very end of the 19th century.
