Staying at Thornbury Castle means sleeping in one of England’s great Tudor houses. Expedia lists Tudor-style architecture on three floors.
According to the listing, the rooms are individually furnished with bespoke furniture and offer high-quality and allergy-friendly bedding, blackout curtains, bathrobes and slippers, a private bathroom with bath or shower, designer toiletries, a desk, a kettle with tea and coffee and free mineral water. Some rooms show period touches such as four-poster beds, stone walls and open fireplaces.
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The property also offers a bar and lounge, private picnics, private dining for couples, archery, a garden with outdoor furniture and spa treatments including deep-tissue massage, aromatherapy and reflexology. A 24-hour reception, concierge, a wedding service and meeting rooms round off the facilities.

The Duke of Buckingham needed a home to match his rank as the wealthiest noble in England, owner of 11 castles and 124 manors. He chose Thornbury as his main residence: Bristol’s port, where luxury goods arrived, was close, and so were the Welsh Marches, where he held land and was responsible for law and order. The new castle was built of dressed Cotswold stone with ornate, patterned brick chimneys, and had a great hall, a privy kitchen and a large great kitchen for entertaining on a grand scale.
Wikipedia notes that historians remain unsure whether Thornbury was only a luxury home in the fashionable castellated style or also a serious defensive building. It stands next to St Mary’s Church, whose foundation dates back to Norman times, and, according to Wikipedia, it has been a member of the Relais & Châteaux association since November 2021.
